COMMUNIST LEADER EXECUTED

Danong, Wednesday. Former leader of the Cambasian Communist regime, Quang Lok, was executed this week for crimes against humanity. His rule ended in 1967 after a successful coup dismantled the Communist apparatus and installed a democratic government. He was captured by victorious rebel troops, attempting to flee into neighbouring Cambodia, and held while a court could be assembled to try him. A lengthy trial ensued, with many survivors of harsh communist torture coming forward. After two years of appeals, the sentence was carried out by firing squad earlier this week…

NEW CAMBASIAN PRESIDENT

Presidential elections in Cambasia have installed Ji-Hun Bai as president. His Xi’an Party, mainly supported by large landowners, has been the strongest political force in Cambasia since the coup that ended the Communist regime in 1967. Bai himself was a guerilla who fought the communists for many years, and a leading figure in the final stages of the 1967 civil war.

UN CONCERNED OVER CAMBASIA

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights (OHCHR) has voiced concern over the number of people incarcerated under the rule of Cambasian President Ji-Hun Bai. Elected in a landslide victory in 1987, Bai’s main policies have been agricultural reform, privatizing land taken from the communists. The UN first voiced concerns over the situation in Cambasia after many of Bai’s political opponents were imprisoned in 1991, just before the elections in 1992. The Office of the High Commissioner, formed in 1993, has had the Cambasian situation under observation since its inception. The commissioner, Mr. Ayalo Lasso, urged action in a speech to the Security Council on Tuesday. He said that “while the problem of political prisoners in Cambasia has been under observation since 1991, the news that the Quai’Lun people in the country’s agricultural south are being incarcerated en masse is of grave concern, and demands swift action”…

UN INTERVENTION IN CAMBASIA

The United Nations announced last week that it would send a peacekeeping force into Cambasia to prevent the spread of civil war in the country’s south. The insurgency has been raging in the country’s south since 1995, when the native Quai’Lun people rose against the army, with suspected Khmer Rouge involvement. The UN hopes that the force, mainly comprised of German and French troops, will be able to protect the civilian population long enough for a resolution to the conflict to be reached…
